Der Blick des Pan

The Antwerp sculptor Cornelis Floris (1514-1575), not Maarten van Heemskerck, was the author of the collection of famous drawings of Rome in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett. This is the result of a critical examination of the collection of drawings and their complex transmission history. Floris' engagement with the works of antiquity and the Renaissance - documented in three sketchbooks created between 1535/6 and 1538 in Mantua and Rome - was central to his later work. The richly illustrated text volume is accompanied by a landscape-format illustrated book in which the three sketchbooks are reconstructed, reproduced in their original size and annotated.
