Participatory Radio

Participatory radio is a new phenomenon in Nepal aswell as whole of South Asia. The movement for citizenparticipation in communication process that startedin Nepal has spread in other South Asian countries.For those academicians, media professionals, orcommunity media activists interested in participatorymedia in Nepal, Participatory Radio is the perfectway to understand how a radio station can be aplatform for public participation in communicationprocess that blurs the boundaries between senders andreceivers.This book not only explores community radio in Nepalbut also explores the conditions that lead to theopening of airwaves from the non-governmentalsectors. Nepal became the first country in South Asiato grant a license to operate a FM radio station fromindependent organization in 1997. Following yearsNepal witnessed mushrooming of myriad radio stations,including the community radio, throughout thecountry. Operated by non-governmental organizations,cooperatives and local governments, these communityradio stations revolutionized the media landscapemaking the fellow villagers not only the listenersbut also the news makers.In this book, Arjun Banjade describes how thecommunity radio station secures the area people'sactive involvement in the communication process aswell as in generating much needed resources. Thisexample demonstrates the democratization ofcommunication and its use in empowering themarginalized sections of population.
