Italy of the Cities

A veritable film on paper through 92 plates/frames comprising solely images and drawings, colours and architectural references interspersed with 92 pages where words rule. For six months during the Shanghai World Expo 2010 all of the thirty thousand visitors per day at the Italian Pavilion walked through a space magically designed by a symphony of images and sounds. Italy of the Cities condenses an urban and architectural history of more than two thousand years, suggesting a vision for the cities of tomorrow, and at the same time allows everyone to experience the breathtaking magic of a journey to Italy.

Peter Greenaway started making his own films in 1966. His curatorial work and the making of exhibitions and installations in Europe includes the Joan Miro Gallery in Barcelona, the Boymans van Beuningen Gallery in Rotterdam, and the Louvre in Paris.

A veritable film on paper, this catalog has been designed to re-create this innovative installation. At the Shanghai World Expo 2010, 30,000 visitors walked through an experiment in ‘architectural cinema’  that magically transported the audience to countless Italian towns in only a few minutes.  This catalog has been designed to recreate in its pages the installation's composite structure. The reader is encouraged to take part in this pleasure trip along the book's pages, amongst signs and colours, words and images, yielding in to curiosity and a visual feast as well as to a refined narration.
