Dr. Lars Krutak (LK) ist Kulturanthropologe, Fotograf und Autor. Er bereist seit fünfzehn Jahren die indigene Welt, um vom Untergang bedrohte Stammestraditionen der Tätowierung und Skarifikation zu dokumentieren. Lars wuchs im dörflichen Rye (205 Einwohner) in Colorado auf und entdeckte seine Leidenschaft für die Tätowierung als Student der Universität von Alaska in Fairbanks, wo er die 2000 Jahre alte Tradition der Lawrence-Island-Yupik-Tätowierung bei der letzten Generation von Tätowierern für seine Master-Arbeit untersuchte. Seitdems betreute er die Discovery-Channel-Serie Tattoo Hunter/Global Ink und trat in der History-Channel-Serie Ancient Aliens sowie in drei National-Geographic-TV-Dokumentationen auf, inklusive The Vanishing Tattoo: Borneo. Krutak wurde 2003 mit dem American Book Award für Literatur ausgezeichnet. Heute arbeitet er im Repatriation Office der Smithsonian Institution des National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
Während seiner nachhaltigen Bemühungen mehr darüber zu erfahren, wie Tätowierungen und andere Formen von Körpermodifikationen die Menschen machen , die sie tragen, bekam Lars zahlreiche traditionelle Tätowierungen: handgeklopfte Arbeiten von den Iban (Borneo), von den Kalinga (Philippinen) and Mentawai (Indonesien), handgestoßene Kunst von buddhistischen Mönchen (Thailand) sowie handgestochene Motive von den Kayabi im brasilianischen Amazonasgebiet. Er trägt außerdem mehr als 100 traditionelle Stichtätowierungen und etwa 1000 Klingen- und Messernarben am ganzen Körper, die er von Volksgruppen wie den Kaningara (Papua-Neuguinea), den Bétamarribé (Benin), den Hamar (Äthiopien) und den Makonde (Mozambique) erhielt.
Dr. Krutak veröffentlichte unter anderem The Tattooing Arts of Tribal Women (2007) und das großformatige Coffee-Table-Buch Kalinga Tattoo: Ancient and Modern Expressions of the Tribal (2010), das sich mit den Kalinga der nördlichen Philippinen befasst.
2013 erscheinen seine neueste Arbeiten über Tätowierungen der nordamerikanischen Ureinwohner in den Büchern Drawing with Great Needles (University of Texas Press) und Tattooing of Native North America (KIT Publishers).

Dr. Lars Krutak (LK) is a cultural anthropologist, photographer, and writer who has travelled the indigenous world for fifteen years documenting the vanishing traditions of tribal tattooing and scarification. Raised in the small town atmosphere of Rye, Colorado (population 205), Lars first discovered his passion for tattooing as a graduate student at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, where he studied the 2000-year-old tradition of St. Lawrence Island Yupik tattoo amongst the last generation of practitioners for his Master's thesis. Since then, he has hosted the Discovery Channel series Tattoo Hunter/Global Ink, appeared in the History Channel series Ancient Aliens, and appeared on three National Geographic television documentaries, including The Vanishing Tattoo: Borneo. Krutak was a co-recipient of the 2003 American Book Award in Literature. In his continued effort to understand how tattoos and other forms of body modification make the people who wear them, Lars has acquired many traditional tattoos: hand-tapped work from the Iban (Borneo), Kalinga (Philippines), and Mentawai (Indonesia); hand-poked art from Buddhist monks (Thailand); and hand-pricked designs from the Kayabi of the Brazilian Amazon.
