Leseprobe
"Pain in Medieval and Early Modern Literature" is a documentation of the results of the eponymous conference held in Freiburg on 17th-19th May 2007 with participants from Northern America and Europe. Setting out from a recent interest among cultural studies scholars in pain as a coded representation, the contributors examine the phenomenon of pain in literary texts from the 12th to 17th century. The contributions focus especially on the memory of paid (pain as a mnemonic element, dream narratives), the complexity of the portrayal of pain in texts and illustrations (topos of unutterability, writing in pain, emblematic visualisation) and detailed studies of the connection between pain and piety (the tradition of the "Treatise of Bernard", Elsbeth von Oye's "Offenbarungen") and the literary instrumentalisation of pain in heroic epics and in Middle High German courtly romances.
