"These really are my best pictures!" Dirk Reinartz said to himself as he looked at the photographs of his trip to New York in 1974. He chose several for publication, but sadly died shortly thereafter. This book completes the project he began.

"Eigentlich sind das meine besten Bilder!" sagte sich Dirk Reinartz vor einigen Jahren, als er Fotografien seiner Reisen nach New York 1974 sichtete. Er machte sich an die Auswahl für eine Buchveröffentlichung, starb jedoch kurze Zeit später. Reinartz nimmt den Betrachter mit auf seine ganz eigenen Wege durch die Metropole. In der Masse der Menschen hat er besondere Charaktere und ausdrucksvolle Gesichter gefunden. Und in der Stadt, die viele Schatten wirft, hat er faszinierende Lichtspiele ins Bild gesetzt. Reinartz' Fotografien lassen die Stimmung eines Ortes wieder aufleben, der Mitte der siebziger Jahre voller Möglichkeiten und auf dem Weg zu neuer Blüte war.

Autorentext
Dirk Reinartz, wurde 1947 in Aachen geboren. Er studierte Fotografie bei Otto Steinert an der Folkwangschule in Essen. Von 1971 bis 1977 war er Fotoreporter beim Stern. Seine zahlreichen Reisen führten ihn in viele Länder auf allen Kontinenten. 1977 schloß er sich der Fotografengruppe VISUM an, von der er sich 1982 wieder trennte, um fortan ganz unabhängig zu arbeiten. Reinartz' Reportagen und Berichte erschienen in vielen Magazinen, unter ihnen "Life", "Fortune", "Der Spiegel", das "SZ-Magazin" und insbesondere das "Zeit-Magazin" und "Art". Seit 1985 legte er seine Arbeiten auch in Buchform vor. Dirk Reinartz' Fotografien wurden in zahlreichen Ausstellungen gezeigt, sein Projekt "totenstill" etwa an 25 Orten weltweit, unter ihnen Berlin, New York, Warschau und Santiago de Chile. Seit 1998 war Dirk Reinartz Professor für Fotografie an der Muthesius Hochschule in Kiel. Er lebte in Buxtehude bei Hamburg. Dirk Reinartz starb am 27.3.2004 während einer Reise in Berlin.
