Der westpreußische Adlige und Abenteurer Otto Friedrich von der Groeben bereiste im Auftrag des Großen Kurfürsten von Brandenburg, Friedrich Wilhelm, vom Herbst 1682 bis Frühjahr 1683 die Westküste Afrikas mit dem Auftrag, dort einen Handelsstützpunkt zu errichten. Er gilt als Begründer der bis zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts existierenden brandenburgisch-preußischen Kolonie Großfriedrichsburg. Sein im Jahre 1694 veröffentlichter Reisebericht, heute einer der wertvollsten historischen Quellen zur Geschichte der europäischen Kolonisierung Westafrikas sowie fast das einzige umfassende schriftliche Zeugnis zur Geschichte der frühen deutschen Kolonisation, ist zudem von einmaliger Bedeutung für die frühere deutsche Kolonialgeschichte, Anthropologie und historische Ethnologie, Buch- und Sozialgeschichte sowie Marine- und Entdeckungsgeschichte. Zugleich hilft die Guineische Reise-Beschreibung Klarheit darüber zu verschaffen, welchen persönlichen Anteil der Autor an Sklavenhandel und Kolonialismus hatte. *** Between autumn 1682 and spring 1683 the West Prussian nobleman and adventurer Otto Friedrich von der Groeben travelled down the west coast of Africa at the request of the Great Elector of Brandenburg, Friedrich Wilhelm, in order to establish a trading post there. He is considered to be the founder of the Brandenburg-Prussian colony of Grossfriedrichsburg, which survived until the early 18th century. His account of his travels, first published in 1694, is one of the most valuable historical sources relating to the European colonisation of West Africa and almost the only surviving written testimony to the history of early German colonisation. It is also uniquely important for the study of early German colonial history, of anthropology and historical ethnology, social history, book history, maritime history and the history of exploration. The Guineisische Reise-Beschreibung also helps to shed light on the author's personal involvement with the slave trade and colonialism.
