Fritz Hartung (18831967), Professor an den Universitäten Halle, Kiel und Berlin, gehörte zu den profiliertesten deutschen Historikern seiner Zeit. Seine Bücher, vor allem die vielfach aufgelegte »Deutsche Verfassungsgeschichte«, waren jahrzehntelang Standardwerke. Der Historiker war kein Anhänger der Weimarer Republik, stand aber auch dem Nationalsozialismus fern und erregte mehrfach den Unwillen der NS-Machthaber. Nach 1945 arbeitete er, obwohl in West-Berlin wohnend, für die Akademie der Wissenschaften in Ost-Berlin. So wurde er schon bald zu einer Mittlerfigur der geteilten deutschen Geschichtswissenschaft der Nachkriegszeit.

Hans-Christof Kraus taught at the universities in Speyer, Stuttgart, Munich and Jena. Since 2007 he teaches Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Passau. His main research areas are German and British history from the 18th to the 20th century, history of politics and international relations, history of modern political thought, constitutional history and history of historiography.
