Thukydides hat sein unvollendetes Werk über den Peloponnesischen Krieg als ,Besitztum für immer' für die Nachwelt konzipiert. Es wird hier in einer neuen Übersetzung vorgelegt, die einerseits die Eigenwilligkeit des Originals getreuer wiedergibt, sich andererseits jedoch von der heutigen deutschen Sprache weniger entfernt als vorhandene Versionen. Der Band bietet außerdem eine ausführliche Einleitung sowie erläuternde Anmerkungen.
