Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. The original texts are comprehensively annotated, and feature an introductory chapter. In the new volumes, additional essays delve into specific aspects of the works, illuminating their historical context and reception to the present day. Aesop lebte nach Angaben Herodots um die Mitte des 6. Jh.v.Chr. auf Samos. Sicheres über die Person Aesop ist nicht bekannt. Es wird vermutet, dass er ein griechischer Sklave war. Er gilt als Begründer der Fabeldichtung. Seine volkstümlichen Fabeln wurden zunächst mündlich überliefert und erst Jahrhunderte später aufgezeichnet. Unter "Aesop'schen Fabeln" versteht man heute eine bestimmte Art der Erzählung über Wahrheitslehren oder moralische Inhalte. Dr. Rainer Nickel studierte Klassische Philologie in Marburg und Berlin und wurde 1970 in Berlin über ein philosophiegeschichtliches Thema promoviert. Der Altphilologe arbeitete zunächst als Lehrer für Latein und Griechisch, bevor er Leiter des Max-Planck-Gymnasiums in Göttingen wurde. Er ist Mitarbeiter der Reihe "Tusculum" und an der Herausgabe der Zeitschrift "Der altsprachliche Unterricht" beteiligt. Er zählt zu den führenden Didaktikern des altsprachlichen Unterrichts.
