Nelson Mandelas Haftzeit begann am 5. August 1962 und endete am 11. Februar 1990. Nach seiner Entlassung und dem Ende der Apartheid wurde er zum ersten schwarzen Präsidenten seines Landes gewählt und trug entscheidend durch seine Politik der Versöhnung dazu bei, Südafrika vor einem blutigen Bürgerkrieg zu bewahren. In den langen Jahren seiner Haft hat Mandela zahlreiche Briefe geschrieben: an seine Frau und seine Kinder, seine Anwälte, den Gefängnisdirektor und den Premierminister. So unmittelbar wie nirgendwo sonst sprechen in diesen Briefen seine Gedanken und seine Gefühle zu uns - doch zugleich schildern sie auch höchst anschaulich das Leben und den Alltag im Gefängnis. Aus Anlass des 100. Geburtstages von Nelson Mandela am 18. Juli 2018 erscheint nun erstmals eine Auswahl von 250 Briefen aus dem Gefängnis, herausgegeben von der Nelson-Mandela- Foundation, von denen mehr als 90% bislang unveröffentlicht sind. Sie sind ein ergreifendes Zeugnis der Humanität und der menschlichen Größe, das kein Leser ohne Bewegung zu lesen vermag.

Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as the first democratically-elected President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Mandela established the Nelson Mandela Foundation as his post-presidential office in 1999. It is a not-for-profit organization which has, since 2004, been transformed into an archive and trusted voice on his life and times. It carries out its mandate to promote Mandela's vision and work by convening dialogues and creating platforms for engagement around critical issues to promote social justice.

Arrested in 1962 as South Africa's apartheid regime intensified its brutal campaign against political opponents, forty-four-year-old lawyer and African National Congress activist Nelson Mandela had no idea that he would spend the next twenty-seven years in jail.
