Witold Medykowski's book is a carefully researched study of the Nazis' deeply conflicted approaches to using Jewish forced labor in the General Government from the conquest of Poland to the large-scale extermination campaign of Aktion Reinhard. While Medykowski addresses his arguments to a wide variety of scholars, the work's primary value lies in its illumination of the bureaucratic and ideological confusion at the heart of the National Socialist regime, as well as the response of Polish Jews to the terrifying uncertainty of life under Nazi occupation. One of the volume's strengths is the author's command of both primary and secondary sources in Polish as well as German, and his extensive research in Polish, Israeli, and German archives.Jesse Kauffman, Eastern Michigan University, Holocaust and Genocide Studies
