"Today ultrasonic and electromagnetic signals are being used for characterizing materials - measuring material properties and detecting internal defects - in a variety of engineering structures, such as airplanes and space structures, civil infrastructure, nuclear power plants, pressure-vessels and pipes, as well as for inspecting human body parts, such as bones, soft tissues, tumors and unborn fetuses. In spite of the ever increasing popularity and wide range of applications of this technology by researchers in physical science and bioscience, medical technicians, factory workers and engineers, we currently have a limited supply of good books that cover both the fundamentals and the advanced applications of this technology"--

"The book comprises an essential reference for researchers and graduate students working in ultrasonic or electromagnetic NDE. The different chapters contributed by recognized experts in the field cover both fundamental theory as well as current research areas."Dr. Paul Fromme, University College London, UK "Professor Kundu is to be congratulated for bringing together this list of experts, each with many years of experience, as contributors to this much needed book. The book provides a comprehensive and rigorous approach of the fundamentals of linear and nonlinear ultrasonics and electromagnetic methods, including a chapter on the newly emerging THz technique. The book also provides enough advanced engineering and biological applications to make the reader familiar with these technologies, including applications of guided waves, nonlinear ultrasonics, laser-ultrasonics, acoustic microscopy, and fiber optics. This makes this book an excellent text for a senior/first-year graduate course in nondestructive testing and evaluation, or as a text in a course in engineering and biological materials characterization. It is also an excellent reference book for practicing engineers and scientists, and I highly recommend it."Henrique Reis, Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA "The authors present theory and applications in details for the readers to appreciate the challenges involved and opportunities for significant advancement. Adequate references are included for further exploration. Overall, some of the chapters in this book are a good reference source of information on the state-of-the-art of current researches. They will be very useful to graduate students and researchers."Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Vol. 134, No. 2, August 2013

Autorentext
Tribikram Kundu is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Dr. Kundu has made significant and original contributions to both basic and applied research in nondestructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) by ultrasonic and electromagnetic techniques. His fundamental research interests are in the analysis of elastic and electromagnetic wave propagation in multilayered solids, fracture mechanics, biomechanics, and computational mechanics. Dr. Kundu has published widely, including seven books, 15 book chapters, and 270 technical papers. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and a life member of the Alexander von Humboldt Association of America (AvHAA). He is also the chairman of the SPIE yearly conference on Health Monitoring of Structural and Biological Systems. He has been serving as the associate editor of the Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology since 2006 and of Structural Health Monitoring: An International Journal since 2008. Dr. Kundu has been the advisory editor of the Structural Longevity journal since its inauguration in 2009 and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Civil Engineering Science.

Klappentext
This textbook presents the latest advances in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and features the incorporation of electromagnetic NDE techniques, which are the second most popular NDE method after ultrasonic NDE. With questions, problems, and worked out examples, the text describes biomedical applications and presents examples of modern NDE methods in the testing of medical devices. Contributors address such topics as cylindrical waveguide applications in ultrasonic evaluation, laser-ultrasonic techniques, structural health monitoring, acoustic microscopy, THz radiation, and fiber optics.

Zusammenfassung
Most books on nondestructive evaluation (NDE) focus either on the theoretical background or on advanced applications. Bridging the gap between the two, Ultrasonic and Electromagnetic NDE for Structure and Material Characterization: Engineering and Biomedical Applications brings together the principles, equations, and applications of ultrasonic and electromagnetic NDE in a single, authoritative resource. This is also one of the first books to incorporate a number of popular NDE methods based on electromagnetic techniques.
Combines Engineering and Biological Material Characterization Techniques in One BookThe book begins with the relevant fundamentals of mechanics and electromagnetic theory, derives the basic equations, and then, step by step, covers state-of-the-art topics and applications of ultrasonic and electromagnetic NDE that are at the forefront of research. These include engineering, biological, and clinical applications such as structural health monitoring, acoustic microscopy, the characterization of biological cells, and terahertz imaging.
Covers Numerous Applications of Ultrasonic and Electromagnetic Techniquesfrom the Traditional to the AdvancedWritten in plain language by some of the world's leading experts, the book includes worked-out examples and exercises that make this an outstanding resource for coursework. The coverage of traditional and advanced NDE applications also appeals to practicing engineers and researchers.
