La première biographie d'Athénaïs Michelet, seconde épouse de Jules Michelet et personnalité atypique défiant tous les codes de son époque. Un destin romanesque, singulier et inédit, par l'auteur du Roman de Jeanne. Après une enfance difficile auprès d'une mère acariâtre et d'un père secrétaire de Toussaint Louverture, adoré mais âgé, devenue institutrice et républicaine convaincue, Athénaïs se plonge dans la lecture de Du Prêtre, de la femme, de la famille , de Jules Michelet. Ce livre, aussi scandaleux qu'anticlérical, ébranle ses fondements religieux et provoque chez elle une profonde remise en question. Aussi décide-t-elle de rencontrer l'historien. Dès lors, tout va très vite. Ils se marient, et commence pour Athénaïs une existence de femme soumise à un grand homme terriblement aimant : père de substitution, Michelet se révèle littéralement obsédé par son épouse, voulant la posséder tout entière, jusqu'à l'observation permanente de son corps, jusqu'à l'étouffement... Malgré cela, elle parviendra à devenir écrivain et publiera à la mort de son époux ses oeuvres inédites, avant de devenir l'égérie du sculpteur Bourdelle.

John Forrester (1949 2015) was Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge and Head of the HPS department for seven years. He was Editor of the journal Psychoanalysis and History from 2005 to 2014, and authored Freud's Women (with Lisa Appignanesi, 1992), Dispatches from the Freud Wars (1997) and Truth Games (1997), amongst other titles. He published over fifty papers in scholarly journals, principally concerned with the history and philosophy of psychoanalysis. His work on cases as a genre and as a style of reasoning was posthumously published as Thinking in Cases (2016).
