Calculus: A Liberal Art

This introduction to caclulus was written for liberal arts students, particularly for those whose principal interest is in the humanities. While the usual topics in calculus are covered, the subject is treated in an historical manner that gives a picture of the nature of mathematics and of the place of mathematics within the liberal arts.

With only a modest amount of high school mathematics required as background and algebraic manipulations kept at a simple level (except for optional material giving stronger students brief glimpses for deeper ideas of real analysis) this text is suitable for a one-semester course designed to fulfill general education requirements.
