Das Studienbuch Linguistik orientiert in 11 Kapiteln umfassend über die zentralen Teilgebiete der Sprachwissenschaft: Semiotik, Phonetik/Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax, Semantik, Pragmatik, Textlinguistik und Gesprächsanalyse, Sozio-, Psycho- und Historiolinguistik. Jedes Kapitel wird eingeleitet durch eine knappe, kommentierte Auswahlbibliographie sowie durch eine Skizze der Forschungsgeschichte. Das Ziel jedes Kapitels ist es, die für den jeweiligen Gegenstandsbereich konstitutiven Fragen deutlich zu machen und modellartig zu zeigen, wie ausgewählte Theorien auf diese Fragen antworten. Entsprechend ist die Darstellung nicht einer bestimmten Schule verpflichtet, vielmehr kommt die Vielfalt der linguistischen Zugänge zum Ausdruck. Dieses Vorgehen zeichnet auch die in der vorliegenden 5.
