Die dynamischen Modernisierungsprozesse der Wissenschaft und ihrer institutionellen Ausprägungen in Österreich und Europa haben auch die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW) erfasst. In ihrer Doppelfunktion als Gelehrtengesellschaft im klassischen Sinn und als österreichweite Trägerorganisation innovativer Grundlagenforschung stellt die ÖAW eine europäische Besonderheit dar. Erstmals werden in diesem Buch aus öffentlichrechtlicher und sozialwissenschaftlicher Sicht Aufgaben, Entwicklung, Rechtsstellung und Organisation der ÖAW kritisch analysiert, in ihren tragenden Ideen und soziokulturellen Rahmenbedingungen interpretiert sowie Perspektiven für die Zukunft im Europäischen Forschungsraum aufgezeigt. In its double function both as a classical learned society and as Austria's leading institution in promoting basic research and innovation the Austrian Academy of Sciences holds a unique position in Europe. This book for the first time analyses the tasks, historical development, legal framework and organisation of the Austrian Academy of Sciences from the perspective of public law as well as from a social science approach. It provides an interpretation of the theoretical background and cultural framework conditions of the Academy and presents perspectives for the future within the European Research Area.
