The Italian reformer Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1561) arrived in Zurich in 1556 after long years of fleeing from the Roman inquisition, and taught there as professor of Old Testament studies. Moreover, he took part in the religious colloquy of Poissy as a church diplomat and wbecame an important collaborator of Heinrich Bullinger and Johannes Calvin.Michael Baumann examines the biography of Vermigli's last years, his theology (trained in late medieval scholasticism, but reasoning biblically as a reformed theologian) and Vermigli's impact on Zurich's church history.

Peter Martyr Vermigli - better known in the English-speaking world then on the continent - was one of the most highly cultured theologians in the 16th century. He combines scholastic arguments with a specific reformed position in the different religious disputes in the second half of the 16th century; e.g. the dispute on the Lord's Supper between reformed and Lutheran Theologians.
Peter Martyr came to Zurich as a refugee from Oxford after enthronement of Mary I. Tudor 1556. He was installed in Zurich as lecturer for Old Testament studies. Here, he was able to finish his theological studies and to edit many of the masterworks, especially commentaries about books in the Old and New Testament. He was also sent as protestant negotiator from Zurich to the colloquium of Poissy near Paris where the last attempt to avoid religious wars in France unfortunately collapsed.
Michael Baumann combines a historical description of the last six years of Martyr with an outline of his late and full-grown reformed theology. The third part is addressed to drafting a history of the reception of Martyrs works.
