Among his many books, he has written on aspects of medievalism in Thinking Medieval (2005). Formerly at the University of Bristol, since 2010 he has been the Andrew W Mellon Distinguished Professor of Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
